Hiring is an Investment

As a hiring manager it is important to keep in mind that hiring should not be considered an impulse purchase. It feels like such an emotional decision: you meet someone and there is instant chemistry. They might remind you of you when you started in your job. It is easy to want to make an offer on the spot. Experts suggest that you resist this temptation and put some additional thought and research into hiring candidates. Here are some helpful tips to help you make the right hiring investment.

  1. Sharpen Your Interviewing Skills.
    When conducting interviews it is a good idea to keep the content more or less the same. When you compare interviews it is good to have a bench mark of information to compare.  Go beyond the resume and ask questions to get detailed and in depth answers about their experience and behavior on the job.  Ask them how they’ve handled certain difficult situations in the past that might happen on this job.
  2. Pre-Employment Screening.
    Before you bring someone on board you may want to consider background checks and drug tests. Establish guidelines within your organization that are applied to every candidate to make the hiring process fair. If you are unable to invest in services like this consult your local staffing agency. They are often able to provide this type of screening as part of their recruiting process.
  3. Don’t Skip the References.
    References, like background checking, can be a complicated procedure but it is never a good idea to skip this step. Often companies, especially larger corporations, have policies that they are unable to do anything more than verify dates of employment. Try to dig deeper and talk to someone, perhaps a former employee, who can give you a real insight on the candidate. A staffing company will also be able to complete references for you on candidates they submit for your open positions.
  4. Continued Training.
    Some employees feel the reason they fail on the job is because they don’t have enough support from management. If they are uncomfortable asking questions and seeking clarification about job duties they will sometimes try to solve the problem on their own creating a bigger issue than when they started. It is always good to hire people who understand the information right away but don’t let employees sink or swim.
